Your sort of hope is well placed because I am sort of joking. We need revolutionary change.

I sort of hope John is joking...because complete change at every level may be exactly what we need in the UMC. We get so caught up in membership numbers and statistics that the actual focus of ministry to people gets lost. We're called to love God and love people...do numbers really have an impact on accomplishing that??? Church governance impossible without membership??? Interesting...there are a lot of thriving churches that don't have "membership" as we do in the UMC. Good stuff to think about here!

But if we got rid of membership, local church governance would be impossible. And if we stopped having statistics, we wouldn't be able to apportion delegates. Our church government at every level would have to completely change.
