Hi Russell. My comment was referring to how the time I had to work on stuff I needed to work on was 'lost.' I would love to spend all day with my family if I could, however, I'm not sure that would be beneficial for my family or for the church I serve. It is all about balance which I try to maintain. Over the past 2 weeks the kids have been out of school for four or five days (I'm loosing count). I think the other days have had a 2 hour delay except for one or two and one day last week they got out early (we went to see a movie together). I do thank you for your comment, but I believe you are reading too much into it.

How sad that a day at home with the family is "kind of lost for the most part"...

I found that acting as assistant coach and as associate pastor both have a lot of humility built in as the unwritten part of the job description. Especially when the person in front of us isn't what we desire as a leader.

Your sort of hope is well placed because I am sort of joking. We need revolutionary change.

Augustine once siad that (the citizens of God's Kingdom make the best citizens here- paraphrase)

I happen to agree with that thought. If we truly go about our work as citizens of the kingdom than we will make the best citizens in this world. That is not because we are Christian or American but because we will concern ourselves with the things God is concerned about, justice, love, mercy, etc.

I sort of hope John is joking...because complete change at every level may be exactly what we need in the UMC. We get so caught up in membership numbers and statistics that the actual focus of ministry to people gets lost. We're called to love God and love people...do numbers really have an impact on accomplishing that??? Church governance impossible without membership??? Interesting...there are a lot of thriving churches that don't have "membership" as we do in the UMC. Good stuff to think about here!

But if we got rid of membership, local church governance would be impossible. And if we stopped having statistics, we wouldn't be able to apportion delegates. Our church government at every level would have to completely change.

i suppose in some ways this is an accurate statement. if people of Christ lived by the beatitudes and the greatest commandments then we'd have some awesome citizenry (is that word?). however, what you are probably getting worried on, and i see it too, is when the line is blurred that the only good citizens can be Christians or the Christianity is civic and not spiritual. which are all underlying messages, intended or not, in the whole political fundamentalist bed.

A spiritual exercise....very much so. I find this in much of life too. What seems like a 'normal' activity can become a spiritual exercise. It amazes me what God is able to use to help us grow and mature in our faith! - Dave.
